YOUR DATA
Privacy in Nær
Last updated 23 September 2026
Nær is developed by Ruben Hollund Espeland. The app brings together prayer, Bible reading and personal notes. You do not need a separate Nær account.
This page describes the current app and this website. It will be updated when features affecting data handling change.
What you store in the app
Prayers, notes, Bible highlights and settings are stored on your device. This content is used for the features you choose, such as notes, reminders, widgets and recovery. Bible texts are included in the app and can be read offline. The app does not send Bible searches to an external Bible service and has no built-in advertising or analytics tools.
Backups and Apple iCloud
Nær creates local backups and uses your Apple Account's private CloudKit database for iCloud backups when the account and service are available. Backups include prayers, notes and Bible highlights. They are not published or made available to other Nær users. Apple operates iCloud. This is backup, not continuous synchronization.
Nær retains backup history for recovery. Older copies may contain information you later delete in the app. Backups from earlier installations may remain after you choose to start fresh. Deleting data locally therefore does not automatically delete all backups.
You can export a JSON file and choose where to save or share it. Nær does not encrypt the export file. It contains personal content and should be kept safe. Your iPhone or iPad may also back up app data through its own system settings. See also Apple's privacy policy.
Widgets and reminders
Selected widget content is shared locally between the app and its widget extension. Content on the Lock Screen may be visible to others. Use the discreet privacy setting to hide names and prayer text. Reminders require notification permission and may include information about a prayer request.
Quiet time, Focus and app blocking
App blocking is optional and requires permission through Apple's Screen Time system. Selected apps are handled through Apple's system picker and frameworks. Nær does not send Screen Time usage history to its own services. Focus integration uses shortcuts you set up yourself. You can use the standard timer without these features. Speech-to-text is not enabled in the current user interface.
Deletion and control of your content
You can delete content in the app. The option to delete all prayers and notes removes prayers, notes, widget content and Bible highlights locally, but preserves previous backups. Uninstalling removes local app data; it does not guarantee deletion of iCloud backups or exported files. Manual exports and device backups must be managed separately.
The current app does not have a dedicated button to delete all private CloudKit history. Contact us if you need help understanding which backups may exist. Do not treat local deletion as complete deletion of cloud backups.
When you contact support
If you email us, the developer receives your email address, message and any attachments. These are used to respond and follow up on your request, not for marketing. Email is handled through Gmail. Avoid sending sensitive prayers, information about other people or complete backups. You can request deletion of support correspondence; any need for further retention will be assessed individually.
